Safaris and air safaris

Okomitundu is situated in the heart of Namibia and is thus the ideal point of departure for safaris to the many sights of the surrounding country.
From Okomitundu we take you…

  • west through the Namib Desert to Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast
  • north-west into the geologically fascinating Damara country and
  • to the Himba, one of the last nomadic shepherd peoples of the world in Kaokoveld
  • north to the Etosha National Park, rich in wild game
  • north-east to the tropical areas of the Kavango, to the Caprivi Strip and the Victoria Falls
  • south to the Fish River Canyon, the biggest canyon in Africa, and to Lüderitz in the south-west, the centre of the legendary diamond rush

With the support of Dietlind of the Acacia Namibia agency, we organise safaris for you to your dream destination, completely inclusive of all the required land vehicles or aircraft, drivers, pilots and accommodation.

Farm tours

Guided tours through the 18,000 hectare area of the farm are included in several package offers, but are also available on a daily basis if requested. Depending on participant interests, a tour can last anything between two and three hours.
We take you out in an open cross-country vehicle through Okomitundu, giving you an open view and allowing you to feel the wind in your face and savour the scents of the savannah. You can listen to bird calls, crickets and cicadas and of course observe many wild animals in their natural habitat. For example kudu, oryx, mountain zebra, ostrich and other smaller species such as guinea fowl, baboons, squirrels - and with a little luck also cheetahs, black eagle, klipspringer and many more.
Of course we stop whenever you would like to explore cliffs, plants and trees, flowers or insects or simply enjoy the view.

Tree trail

Explore Namibia’s flora: on the farm and along some of the paths many trees are marked with South African tree numbers; a list with the numbers and names of the trees is available in the office.

Archery

A secured range is provided where you can learn archery under the guidance of Horst. There are bows in various sizes and strengths.

Day excursions

The farms itself is very large and offers many attractive destinations for relaxing picnics. Here we are happy to provide whatever you wish.In Okahandja, about an hour away by car, there is an interesting wood craft market offering Namibian carvings. Okahandja also has the tombs of the Herero chiefs dating back to the German colonial period. The Herero Day on the first weekend after August 23rd is a colourful spectacle with a military parade and horseback games in fantasy German uniforms. The Herero women appear in magnificent long dresses in Victorian style. The town of Karibib is also about one hour away by car. The tourist centre there is well-known for its beautiful semi-precious stones and jewellery from the area of the Erongo Mountains and the Spitzkoppe.

Trips to the coast

Our trip to the Namibian coast takes you through the mountains of the so-called Randstufe, which separates the coastal plane of Namibia from the much higher inland area. Here one can find the primitive Welwitschia plant – a rare tree with just two strap-like leaves whose trunk grows entirely in the soil. This route also crosses the Namib Desert on the way to the coast.

Swakopmund is one of Namibia’s most popular holiday destinations. During the German colonial period, Swakopmund was the country’s most important harbour. Still bearing witness to this age are the old landing bridge and mole which today protects the beach from the rough surf. The architecture of the oldest buildings from the early 20th century is reminiscent of a German Baltic coast resort. The vast sandy beaches are ideal for long walks. Boat trips on the sea are accompanied by friendly seals and dolphins. You can also cross the dunes on quad bikes (four-wheeled motorcycles), go riding on boards or observe the amazing diversity of the insect world.

The return trip takes you along the coast, past salt production plants and vast lichen fields to Henties Bay, where you turn east and return to Okomitundu via the Spitzkoppe, Usakos and Karibib.

Swimming

Okomitundu has two large swimming pools: one large circular pool and a 12-metre rectangular pool. Both can be heated, so swimming under the open sky is a pleasure during the winter months too.

Children’s playground

The lovingly equipped playground has a sand pit, swings and an inviting, bright room with picture books, drawing materials and games. Children love it – and so do their parents!
Nearby there are spacious aviaries with pigeons, parrots, squirrels and – a little further away – rabbits. Children can go to the kitchen to get peanuts and bread to feed the animals.

Library

In the library there are non-fiction books on Namibian flora and fauna, novels, newspapers and various games for the rare rainy days or other quiet times. For those who do not wish to be totally cut off from world events during their holiday, there is also a television.
